Considerations

We will be using an AIFF Sound format to export our sound for our radio drama. This is because an AIFF file is an Apple proprietary format and lossless. As we are using an Apple iMac, this would be most suitable for us. It directly copies the original audio and maintains high quality sound. Therefore, our radio drama will have high quality sounds.

We will store our sound file on a cloud drive on the iMac. Cloud drive is a web-based service that provides storage space on a remote server. An advantage is that stored files can be accessed from anywhere via Internet connection. Therefore, it will not be difficult to gather all of our sounds together for editing. Also, all cloud storage services have desktop folders for Mac’s. This allows us to drag and drop files between the cloud storage and our local storage.

We will be also using an Upward compression. This involves processing that squashes the quieter elements while leaving the loud bits alone. In our radio drama, most of our sounds will be loud, therefore these sounds will still be heard in the drama.

Technologies involved in producing a Radio Broadcast

At the Radio 1 station they use man y tools to help them with the production overall, so the show is ready in time for it to be aired. Such as:

·         Workstation: this is where all the equipment is kept and where they record there shows as you can see in the image above. At : they’ve shown a workstation where they record their
·         Microphones: it is used to capture audio so we can hear the presenters’ dialogue clearly without any background noises.
·         Computer: this is used for storing and processing data, these programs enable computers to perform wide range of tasks.
·         CD player: is a device that plays audio compact discs, which are a digital optical disc data storage format.
·         Headphones: this can be used to listen to audio signals such as music or speech.
·         Mini disc: is a magneto-optical disc-based data storage format offering a capacity of 60, 74 minutes and, later, 80 minutes, of digitized audio of Hi-MD data.
·         Control pad: is a pad is a type of game controller held in two hands, where the fingers are used to provide input.
·         DJ controller: this is used to adjust the speed of a song and to do this they spin the wheel either clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Playlist - The employees on the playlist committee have to choose around 40 records each week for repeated daytime play where they need to play these chosen songs within a certain time (A-list records get 25 plays a week, B-list 15, and C-list eight to 10). Then after deciding if they should keep current play listed tracks, the discussions moves on to new additions they can add to the playlist. People can listen to posted playlists or they can listen to it live if they download the Radio 1 app. And this app makes it easier for people to use as they can listen to Radio 1 on their phones anywhere.
Digital Playout – a playout is a system which includes all the sounds and jingles they need for that show which is all downloaded and ready to be played. They can also set a timer for when it must be played so they don’t a DJ when recording the show.
Digital Cartwall – is jingle player which offers a multiple pages of instant audio buttons which have pre-recorded the previous night, ready for quick playback. They can also be played in background during a conversation. There are usually around 56 audio buttons per page which include a variety of adverts, jingles and songs.
